  • Choose a San Diego electrician who’s C-10 licensed, provides a thorough on-site assessment before quoting, and manages permits, San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) coordination, and warranty support end-to-end.

  • With decades of experience in San Diego’s older housing stock, a full-service multi-trade team, and factory-certified expertise, Point Loma Home Pros is the trusted choice for Zinsco panel replacement done right.

Zinsco Panel Replacement in San Diego: What You Need to Know First

A Zinsco panel replacement or upgrade in San Diego generally runs between $ 9,000 and $18,000, depending on your home’s panel amperage, the condition of the existing wiring and meter socket, and whether coordination with SDG&E or permit work adds complexity. Most standard 200-amp replacements fall in the middle of that range, while homes requiring additional wiring updates or service-entrance work tend to be on the higher end.

Zinsco panels were manufactured from the 1950s through the mid-1970s and later rebranded under the GTE-Sylvania name after Zinsco Electrical Products was acquired. They remain common in San Diego neighborhoods with older housing stock, such as Point Loma, North Park, Mission Hills, and La Mesa. However, breakers have a documented failure mode in which they fuse to the aluminum bus bar over time, meaning they may not trip during an overload, posing a serious fire risk.

At Point Loma Home Pros, we specialize in panel upgrades, including Zinsco replacements, and we approach every replacement with the safety, code compliance, and long-term reliability that a fire-risk panel deserves.

How Much Does a Zinsco Panel Replacement Cost in San Diego?

Costs vary based on several factors, but San Diego homeowners replacing a Zinsco panel should generally budget between $ 9,000 and $18,000

Zinsco replacements fall at the higher end of general panel work because every breaker must be replaced with new AFCI or GFCI breakers compatible with the new panel (the old Zinsco breakers aren’t reusable), and code corrections like grounding and bonding updates become mandatory at the time of replacement.

Here’s a general breakdown of what affects your quote:

  • Panel amperage: 100-amp panels cost less; 200-amp panels are standard, and 400-amp service upgrades cost more.
  • Meter socket condition: You’ll need to budget more if the meter socket or service entrance needs replacement.
  • Wiring condition: Homes with aluminum branch-circuit wiring may require additional remediation.
  • Access and location: Panels in tight spaces, attics, or requiring drywall work and labor time.
  • Utility coordination: SDG&E must disconnect and reconnect service, typically resulting in 4–8 hours without power during installation.
  • Permits: San Diego city permits add to your total costs and are legally required.

At Point Loma Home Pros, we offer flexible financing options that spread the cost of the work into manageable monthly payments, with plans available as low as $99 a month, allowing you to replace a fire-risk panel now rather than delay the safety upgrade due to budget constraints. Ask us about financing during your initial assessment, and we’ll walk you through the options that fit your situation.

How to Choose the Right Electrician for a Zinsco Panel Replacement in San Diego?

Confirm Their Experience With Zinsco Panels

Zinsco replacements require specialized knowledge that generic residential panel work doesn’t demand. Ask any contractor how many Zinsco replacements they’ve completed in the past year, whether they’ve encountered corroded bus bars during those jobs, and how they handle the mandatory breaker replacement process.

Verify Active C-10 Licensing & Insurance Coverage

Look up the contractor’s license number through the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) website to confirm it’s active, in good standing, and free of disciplinary actions. Also verify they carry current general liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage.

Confirm They Handle Permits & SDG&E Coordination

Every Zinsco replacement in San Diego requires a permit from the City of San Diego and SDG&E coordination for the service disconnect and reconnect. A qualified contractor manages both processes on your behalf, including filing the permit application, scheduling the utility, coordinating the city inspector for final sign-off, and providing you with closed-permit documentation once the work is complete.

Get an Itemized Written Quote

Request a written estimate that itemizes the new panel, all replacement breakers (AFCI and GFCI where required), grounding and bonding upgrades, meter socket or weatherhead replacement if needed, aluminum wiring remediation if applicable, permit fees, SDG&E coordination time, and any drywall or access-related costs.

Check Reviews

Look at how a contractor performs across multiple platforms and pay attention to how they respond to negative reviews. Consistent five-star ratings across multiple platforms tell you more than a handful of testimonials on a single source. At Point Loma Home Pros, we carry strong ratings across Google Reviews, with consistent praise for punctuality, clear communication, and clean workmanship.

Ask About Financing, Warranty & Post-Completion Support:

Ask whether the contractor offers financing options that spread the cost into manageable monthly payments. Also, confirm what labor warranty they provide separate from the manufacturer’s equipment warranty.

We’ve replaced Zinsco panels across San Diego since 1988, and every job comes with our full labor warranty. We also provide end-to-end management from initial assessment through final inspection.

Why San Diego Homeowners Trust Point Loma Pros for Zinsco Panel Replacement

Zinsco panel replacement isn’t a job for shortcuts. Between the mandatory breaker-by-breaker swap and the SDG&E coordination required to disconnect and reconnect service safely, the work demands a licensed electrician who understands both the panel itself and the aging wiring surrounding it in most San Diego homes.

At Point Loma Home Pros, we serve San Diego neighborhoods where Zinsco panels are most likely to still be in service, from Point Loma and Ocean Beach to North Park, Mission Hills, and La Mesa. We have a multi-trade team, which means we can handle your electrical panel replacement alongside any related plumbing, HVAC, or EV charger work in a single coordinated visit. Every job comes with the same standard: safety-first workmanship, honest communication, and no shortcuts. Schedule your Zinsco panel replacement service with us today.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does it cost to replace a Zinsco electric panel?

In San Diego, a full Zinsco panel replacement/upgrades typically costs between $ 9,000 and $18,000 at Point Loma Home Pros. Variables like the condition of the meter socket, wiring remediation needs, and whether you’re bundling additional work (like an EV charger circuit) will push the number up or down. Always get an itemized quote so you know exactly what’s included.

What exactly is a Zinsco panel?

A Zinsco panel is a brand of residential electrical panel manufactured by Zinsco Electrical Products and widely installed in U.S. homes from the 1950s through the mid-1970s. After Zinsco was acquired, the panels were also sold under the GTE-Sylvania name. They were eventually discontinued, but a significant number remain in older homes, particularly in California cities like San Diego, where housing stock from that era is still common.

Are Zinsco electric panels good?

No, Zinsco panels are widely known among electricians for a serious safety flaw that sets them apart from other panel brands installed in American homes. They have a well-documented failure mode in which the breakers fuse to the aluminum bus bar over time, preventing them from tripping during an overload. A breaker that won’t trip means a circuit won’t shut off when it should, which is a serious fire safety concern.

Can a Zinsco panel just be repaired instead of replaced?

No, not in any meaningful way. The failure mode that makes Zinsco panels dangerous isn’t a broken part that can be swapped out; it’s a fundamental design flaw built into how the breakers interact with the bus bar. Replacing individual breakers doesn’t fix the underlying aluminum bus bar corrosion or the design issue that allows breakers to fuse in place.

Why should I choose Point Loma Home Pros for Zinsco panel replacement?

At Point Loma Home Pros, we’ve worked with families in San Diego since 1988. This means we’ve replaced more panels in more San Diego neighborhoods than most competitors will ever see. That experience matters when you’re dealing with older homes that have unexpected wiring configurations and corroded meter sockets. Additionally, we’ll handle the entire process with expertise, so you don’t have to manage multiple contractors or chase down paperwork.

I am very pleased with this company because they have great people working for them. [My technician] was organized and all were at the house in 2 days. Paper booties were worn. The electricians knew what they were doing and produce excellent work. I had 3 new circuits put in along with updating box. All this was done in one day. This co also sends a pix of technician who is coming to your house. Every person had lovely manners, and cleaned up, even vacuumed under stove when it was moved. A fine experience and I’d use them again.

I had a water leak at my house and its cause was extremely difficult to find. Our tech spent a long time carefully analyzing and testing all possible options until he found the cause of the leak, like really a true detective, that nobody else before him was able to find. He demonstrated not only that he is a truly top professional but the he also is kind, patient and understanding. He explained all the issues very well and was also mindful of my time and convenience. He works very fast, efficiently and reliably and is extremely nice human being.

Point Loma Electric and Plumbing did electrical work in our house once and we liked the service the first time so we called them again. The technicians have been nothing but friendly and professional both times. They walked us through every step of the process. They showed up on time and completed the work in a timely manner. If we had any concerns they made sure the address them, if anything was needed, they handled it. We will definitely use Point Loma Electric and Plumbing again. Johnny who oversaw the work is the best!! Thank you

My a/c has not been working for some time. I called Point Loma Electrical and they sent Nicholas Mullins to stop by and check it out. What a great guy. He was very respectful, honest, evaluated the situation and made recommendations that I felt were straight forward. This company is top notch and I would recommend them to any of my friends and family. This is now my go to ac repair company.

We had Point Loma Elec rewire our entire 62 year-old house's electric. They worked efficiently and were thorough letting us know what was discovered and done each day. Timely, neat, and responsive and affordable with great financing. Highly recommend.

This is a great team. I had to replace some fluorescent lights in the kitchen. I couldn't do it myself because the ballasts had to be replaced and that's above my skill level. Anthony and Matt came today and put in new led lights (with a 10 year warranty- fluorescent lights are ancient tech). Anthony and Matt were very professional and efficient. I would recommend them highly!
