FAQs

New Air Conditioning - FAQ

How do I know if I need an AC system replacement?

Over time, even the best AC units wear down. If your current system is struggling to keep up, constantly cycling on and off, or making odd noises, it might be time to replace your air conditioner. Other warning signs include:

  • Increasing energy bills despite regular maintenance
  • Uneven cooling throughout your home
  • Excessive humidity indoors
  • Frequent and costly AC repairs

In many cases, AC system replacement can save you more money in the long run rather than trying to keep an old unit running.

Most residential AC installations take one to two days, depending on the complexity of the job, ductwork modifications, and system type. Our team works efficiently to minimize downtime and ensure a smooth installation.

The right AC size depends on factors like square footage, insulation, and home layout. A professional load calculation ensures you get a properly sized system for maximum comfort and efficiency; too big or too small can cause performance issues.

Because of San Diego’s warm summers and mild winters, energy-efficient central air systems, heat pumps, and ductless mini-splits are great options. Our team can recommend the best system based on your budget and home setup.

The cost varies based on the size, brand, and type of system, as well as any ductwork or electrical upgrades needed. We offer free consultations and financing options to help you find the best solution within your budget.

AC Installation - FAQ

Every home has different cooling requirements, airflow conditions, duct systems, insulation levels, and electrical configurations. Because of this, accurate AC installation pricing requires an in-home evaluation.
An on-site assessment allows the technician to evaluate:

  • ductwork condition
  • airflow performance
  • attic insulation
  • electrical capacity
  • equipment sizing
  • home layout
  • zoning concerns
  • installation accessibility

Without seeing the property, pricing is often just a rough estimate rather than a reliable proposal.

Accurate HVAC pricing depends on much more than square footage or the existing equipment size.
Two homes with similar square footage may require completely different:

  • system sizes
  • duct modifications
  • airflow corrections
  • electrical upgrades
  • permit requirements
  • installation labor

Phone estimates often fail to account for hidden issues that affect system performance and installation cost.

At Point Loma Electric, Plumbing, Heating & Air, we evaluate the entire system before recommending solutions.

Lower HVAC quotes sometimes exclude important parts of the project such as:

  • permits
  • HERS testing
  • duct modifications
  • electrical upgrades
  • airflow corrections
  • proper commissioning
  • code compliance

Some companies focus on replacing equipment as quickly and cheaply as possible without addressing the overall system.

Unfortunately, improperly installed HVAC systems often experience:

  • poor airflow
  • uneven cooling
  • higher utility bills
  • noisy operation
  • reduced lifespan
  • failed inspections

An oversized or undersized AC system can create major comfort and efficiency problems.

Improper sizing may lead to:

  • uneven temperatures
  • excessive humidity
  • short cycling
  • high energy bills
  • reduced equipment lifespan

A professional load calculation helps ensure the system is correctly matched to the home’s actual cooling needs.

Uneven cooling is often caused by:

  • airflow restrictions
  • leaking ductwork
  • inadequate return air
  • poor insulation
  • improper duct design
  • undersized systems

Many older San Diego homes have duct systems that were not designed for modern cooling demands.

A whole-system evaluation helps identify the root cause instead of simply replacing the AC unit.

Continuous AC operation may indicate:

  • improper system sizing
  • low refrigerant
  • dirty coils
  • duct leakage
  • poor insulation
  • airflow problems
  • aging equipment

During San Diego heat waves, older systems often struggle to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures if airflow or ductwork issues are present.

The duct system is responsible for distributing conditioned air throughout the home. Even the best AC equipment can underperform if the ductwork is leaking, undersized, or improperly designed.

Poor duct performance can cause:

  • uneven cooling
  • weak airflow
  • higher utility bills
  • noisy operation
  • reduced efficiency

That is why proper duct evaluation is a critical part of quality AC installation.

Duct inspections and airflow corrections require additional expertise, testing, and labor. Some companies avoid these discussions because it increases project complexity.

However, California now treats HVAC systems as complete performance systems, not simply equipment replacements.

Many older duct systems fail to meet current airflow and leakage standards and may require:

  • sealing
  • modification
  • balancing
  • partial replacement
  • full replacement

for the new system to perform correctly.

HERS stands for Home Energy Rating System testing.

This is a California-required third-party verification process performed after many HVAC installations to confirm the system meets state energy and airflow standards.

Testing may include:

  • airflow verification
  • duct leakage testing
  • refrigerant charge verification
  • installation compliance checks

Most homeowners are unfamiliar with HERS testing until replacing their HVAC system.

Many older duct systems were installed decades ago under outdated building standards.
Over time, ducts can develop:

  • leakage
  • disconnected sections
  • crushed runs
  • damaged insulation
  • restricted airflow
  • inadequate return air

Because California requires HVAC systems to meet modern efficiency standards, older duct systems frequently require upgrades in order to pass inspection.

Permits help ensure the installation meets California:

  • safety requirements
  • airflow standards
  • energy efficiency regulations
  • electrical codes
  • inspection requirements

Permitted HVAC installations help protect:

  • homeowner safety
  • system performance
  • warranty coverage
  • resale value
  • long-term reliability

Unpermitted HVAC work can create:

  • code violations
  • failed home inspections
  • warranty issues
  • comfort problems
  • safety concerns
  • reduced efficiency

In some cases, homeowners may later be required to correct improperly installed systems at additional expense.

For many homeowners, yes. Modern high-efficiency systems can provide:

  • lower utility bills
  • quieter operation
  • improved humidity control
  • more consistent comfort
  • reduced energy usage

This is especially beneficial during extended warm weather and summer heat waves.

Higher SEER-rated systems are generally more energy efficient, but the best option depends on:

  • budget
  • home size
  • insulation
  • usage patterns
  • long-term ownership goals

A professional evaluation helps determine which efficiency level provides the best overall value.

Yes. Heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular in San Diego because they provide both heating and cooling with excellent efficiency.

San Diego’s mild climate is often ideal for heat pump systems.

Not always, but older duct systems should absolutely be evaluated.

Replacing HVAC equipment without addressing damaged or leaking ducts can significantly reduce the performance of the new system.

In many older homes, duct improvements can dramatically improve comfort and airflow.

Yes. Many new HVAC systems offer improved:

  • filtration
  • humidity control
  • airflow consistency
  • ventilation compatibility

Homeowners often combine AC replacement with:

  • whole-home air purifiers
  • upgraded filtration
  • UV air sanitizers
  • duct improvements

to improve indoor air quality throughout the home.

Point Loma Electric, Plumbing, Heating & Air is a Diamond-Level Dealer for:

  • Mitsubishi Electric
  • American Standard

This reflects advanced factory training, installation expertise, and adherence to manufacturer installation standards.

Point Loma Electric, Plumbing, Heating & Air has served San Diego homeowners since 1988 with a focus on:

  • whole-system performance
  • proper airflow evaluation
  • California code compliance
  • long-term reliability
  • quality workmanship
  • older-home expertise

We focus on designing and installing HVAC systems that actually perform properly in real homes—not simply replacing equipment as quickly as possible.

I am very pleased with this company because they have great people working for them. [My technician] was organized and all were at the house in 2 days. Paper booties were worn. The electricians knew what they were doing and produce excellent work. I had 3 new circuits put in along with updating box. All this was done in one day. This co also sends a pix of technician who is coming to your house. Every person had lovely manners, and cleaned up, even vacuumed under stove when it was moved. A fine experience and I’d use them again.

I had a water leak at my house and its cause was extremely difficult to find. Our tech spent a long time carefully analyzing and testing all possible options until he found the cause of the leak, like really a true detective, that nobody else before him was able to find. He demonstrated not only that he is a truly top professional but the he also is kind, patient and understanding. He explained all the issues very well and was also mindful of my time and convenience. He works very fast, efficiently and reliably and is extremely nice human being.

Point Loma Electric and Plumbing did electrical work in our house once and we liked the service the first time so we called them again. The technicians have been nothing but friendly and professional both times. They walked us through every step of the process. They showed up on time and completed the work in a timely manner. If we had any concerns they made sure the address them, if anything was needed, they handled it. We will definitely use Point Loma Electric and Plumbing again. My a/c has not been working for some time. I called Point Loma Electrical and they sent Nicholas Mullins to stop by and check it out. What a great guy. He was very respectful, honest, evaluated the situation and made recommendations that I felt were straight forward. This company is top notch and I would recommend them to any of my friends and family. This is now my go to ac repair company.

This is a great team. I had to replace some fluorescent lights in the kitchen. I couldn't do it myself because the ballasts had to be replaced and that's above my skill level. Anthony and Matt came today and put in new led lights (with a 10 year warranty- fluorescent lights are ancient tech). Anthony and Matt were very professional and efficient. I would recommend them highly!
