Why Do My Drains Keep Clogging? Understanding Cast-Iron Pipe Problems

Published by Point Loma Electric, Plumbing, Heating & Air

The drain is finally clear. The water goes down, the plumber packs up, and you breathe a sigh of relief. Then, a few weeks later, the exact same problem comes back.

If you live in an older San Diego home with cast-iron drain or sewer pipes, recurring clogs deserve a closer look. Clearing a blockage may get things moving temporarily, but it doesn’t always fix the underlying issue.

The good news? A recurring clog doesn’t automatically mean you need brand-new pipes. But it does mean it’s time to find out what keeps causing the backup.

Clearing a Clog vs. Fixing the Cause: Two Different Jobs

Think of drain clearing as opening a quick path for water to flow again. It solves the immediate backup, but the underlying issue often remains.

For instance, clearing a blockage might leave behind years of hardened buildup along the pipe walls. Or, if there’s a sag or a cracked joint in the line, material will just start collecting there again the minute the plumber drives away.

When the same drain backs up repeatedly, ask your plumber two quick questions:

  • What did you actually remove or clear out?
  • What underlying condition could cause this to happen again?

Their answer will help you figure out whether you’re dealing with routine maintenance or a deeper pipe issue that needs repair. At Point Loma Electric, Plumbing, Heating & Air, our San Diego plumbers focus on diagnosing the root cause of recurring drain problems, not just getting the water flowing again. That way, we can recommend the right next step based on what is actually happening inside your plumbing system.

What’s Actually Happening Inside Older Cast-Iron Pipes?

As cast-iron pipes age, corrosion can cause the inside walls to become rough and heavily scaled. Over time, that corrosion and buildup can narrow the pipe and create uneven surfaces where waste and debris get caught, increasing the risk of recurring clogs.

Here are the most common culprits behind recurring backups:

1. Buildup Narrows the Opening

Over decades, rust, scale, and mineral deposits build up inside cast-iron pipes, shrinking the room water has to pass through. This rough, uneven surface catches toilet paper and debris like Velcro. The drain might still work between blockages, but because the opening is restricted, it doesn’t take much to trigger another backup.

2. Damage Creates “Catch Points”

Cracks, rusted-out spots, or shifted joints disrupt smooth flow. If tree roots have found a tiny crack to enter the pipe, simply cutting the roots away re-opens the flow but leaves the “door” wide open for roots to grow back. It’s key to find out if damage is isolated to one spot or spread throughout the line.

3. Low Spots (Pipe “Bellies”) Hold Water and Waste

Over time, the soil under a pipe can settle, creating a low spot or “belly.” Water pools in this dip instead of sloping downhill. Heavy solids collect in the standing water, leading to repeat clogs. While cleaning removes the trapped waste, it can’t lift a sagging pipe back into place.

Is the Issue in One Drain or the Main Line?

Take notice of which fixtures are acting up, and let your plumber know before they begin any work.

What You Notice What to Tell Your Plumber
One sink or shower drains slowly Name the fixture and whether nearby drains work normally.
Several fixtures slow down or gurgle Explain which fixtures are involved and whether symptoms happen together.
Water backs up elsewhere when an appliance drains Describe which appliance was running and where the water appeared.
The same blockage returns after service Share previous invoices, findings, and how long the clearing lasted.

Share past invoices, what was found before, and how long the previous clearing lasted.

Emergency Safety Note: If raw sewage or wastewater is backing up into your home, stop using all water immediately. Keep family and pets away from the affected area, leave sewer cleanout caps closed, avoid harsh chemical drain openers, and call a professional right away.

What a Sewer Camera Inspection Actually Tells You

A video camera inspection takes the guesswork out of plumbing by letting you see inside your pipes in real time.

During this inspection, ask the technician to show you:

  • Exactly where the damage or restriction is located.
  • If thick buildup is hiding the actual condition of the pipe wall.
  • Whether the issue looks isolated or spread throughout the pipe.
  • Any areas the camera couldn’t reach.
  • If a thorough cleaning is needed before doing a second camera pass.

Pro Tip: If a line is heavily clogged or scaled, a camera might not see much on the first try. Often, the best approach is: inspect, clean the line, and inspect again to get a clear picture.

Keep in mind that cameras have limits. They can’t see through solid blockages, nor can they measure how thick or strong the remaining metal wall is just from a video feed.

Does a Repeat Clog Mean Complete Pipe Replacement?

Not necessarily. Here’s what to expect based on the condition of your pipes:

Cleaning or Descaling: If heavy rust and scale buildup are the main issues and the metal underneath is solid, professional descaling can scrape the pipe clean and restore full flow.

Spot Repairs: If damage is limited to one short section, your plumber may be able to repair just that spot without digging up the whole line.

Trenchless Pipe Lining: For pipes with cracks or small holes that still hold their structural shape, epoxy lining can create a brand-new, smooth pipe inside your old one, with no major digging required.

Full Replacement: If a section has completely collapsed, severely shifted, or lost its slope, traditional excavation or replacement is usually the safest, longest-lasting fix.

Questions to Ask Before Paying for Another Drain Clearing

If you feel like you’re stuck in a loop of calling the plumber every few months, ask these questions on the next visit:

  • Are we clearing a blockage in the exact same spot as last time?
  • Can we run a camera to inspect the line right after cleaning it?
  • Can I see the live footage and keep a copy of the video recording?
  • Is this clog being caused by buildup, physical damage, or a slope problem?
  • What will another standard clearing accomplish, and what will it leave unresolved?
  • What are my options for a permanent repair?

If routine maintenance is recommended over a repair, ask why that makes the most financial sense for your situation and what symptoms to watch for that would mean it’s time to reconsider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my sewer pipe be damaged even if water is still draining?

Yes. A pipe can carry water fine until debris catches on a crack or rough patch. Flowing water just means the pipe isn’t completely blocked yet. It doesn’t mean the pipe structure is healthy.

Will descaling make old cast-iron pipes like new?

No. Descaling scrapes away built-up rust and opens up space, but it can’t restore thin or corroded metal, nor can it fix cracks or sagging sections.

Does a camera inspection always show the entire sewer line?

Not always. Heavy grease, standing water, tight bends, or solid blockages can block the camera lens. Ask your plumber how much of the line they were actually able to view.

Should I replace all my cast-iron pipes if one section fails?

Not automatically. It depends on the age and condition of the rest of the system. A camera inspection will help you decide if a localized repair makes sense or if widespread corrosion makes full replacement a better investment.

I am very pleased with this company because they have great people working for them. [My technician] was organized and all were at the house in 2 days. Paper booties were worn. The electricians knew what they were doing and produce excellent work. I had 3 new circuits put in along with updating box. All this was done in one day. This co also sends a pix of technician who is coming to your house. Every person had lovely manners, and cleaned up, even vacuumed under stove when it was moved. A fine experience and I’d use them again.

I had a water leak at my house and its cause was extremely difficult to find. Our tech spent a long time carefully analyzing and testing all possible options until he found the cause of the leak, like really a true detective, that nobody else before him was able to find. He demonstrated not only that he is a truly top professional but the he also is kind, patient and understanding. He explained all the issues very well and was also mindful of my time and convenience. He works very fast, efficiently and reliably and is extremely nice human being.

This is a great team. I had to replace some fluorescent lights in the kitchen. I couldn't do it myself because the ballasts had to be replaced and that's above my skill level. Anthony and Matt came today and put in new led lights (with a 10 year warranty- fluorescent lights are ancient tech). Anthony and Matt were very professional and efficient. I would recommend them highly!
