What Is a Sewer Line Camera Inspection?

A sewer line camera inspection uses a specialized waterproof camera attached to a flexible cable. The camera is inserted into your sewer line through an existing access point and sends live video back to our technician.

This allows us to see the inside of your pipes in real time and identify issues such as cracks, corrosion, root intrusion, or blockages. Because the inspection is non-invasive, it eliminates any guesswork and avoids unnecessary digging.

When Do You Need a Drain Camera Inspection?

There are several situations where drain camera inspection services can be especially helpful. If you are experiencing ongoing plumbing issues, a camera inspection can reveal the root cause.

Common reasons to schedule a drain camera service include:

  • Recurring clogs that return after cleaning
  • Slow drains throughout the home
  • Sewer odors coming from drains or yard areas
  • Suspected tree root intrusion
  • Preparing for a home purchase or renovation

By identifying the exact location and nature of the problem, we can recommend the most effective solution without unnecessary work.

How Our Drain Camera Service Works

Our drain camera inspection services are designed to be efficient and informative for homeowners. We begin by accessing your plumbing system through a cleanout or other entry point. The camera is then carefully guided through the pipe while we monitor the video feed.

As we inspect the line, we look for signs of damage, buildup, or obstructions. Once the inspection is complete, we explain what we found and outline your options clearly. If repairs or cleaning are needed, we can recommend the next steps based on real data from the inspection.

Benefits of Sewer Line Camera Inspections

A professional sewer line camera inspection offers several advantages for homeowners:

  • Accurate diagnosis without digging
  • Faster identification of plumbing problems
  • Ability to locate exact problem areas
  • Helps prevent unnecessary repairs
  • Supports long-term plumbing health

Instead of guessing what might be causing a problem, a camera inspection provides clear answers. This helps homeowners make informed decisions and avoid repeat issues.

FAQs

Sewer Line Camera Inspection FAQ – San Diego Homeowners

What is a sewer line camera inspection?

A sewer line camera inspection uses a specialized waterproof camera attached to a flexible cable that is inserted into your sewer line. The live video feed allows plumbers to see the inside of the pipe in real time without digging.

This helps identify:

  • clogs
  • cracks
  • root intrusion
  • corrosion
  • collapsed pipes
  • grease buildup
  • sewer line offsets

A camera inspection removes guesswork and helps pinpoint the exact cause of underground plumbing problems.

A sewer camera inspection is recommended if you are experiencing:

  • recurring drain clogs
  • slow drains throughout the home
  • sewage backups
  • foul sewer odors
  • gurgling drains or toilets
  • unexplained plumbing issues
  • suspected tree root intrusion

Camera inspections are also commonly performed before purchasing an older home in San Diego.

Recurring clogs often indicate a larger issue deeper in the sewer line.
Common causes include:

  • tree roots
  • pipe damage
  • heavy grease buildup
  • aging cast iron pipes
  • offsets in the sewer line
  • partial collapses

A sewer camera inspection helps determine why the problem keeps returning instead of simply treating the symptoms repeatedly.

Yes. Tree root intrusion is one of the most common sewer line problems in San Diego, especially in older neighborhoods with mature landscaping.

The camera allows plumbers to see:

  • root penetration
  • root masses
  • cracks where roots entered
  • pipe damage caused by roots

This helps determine whether hydro jetting, repair, lining, or replacement may be needed.

Yes. Modern sewer inspection cameras provide highly accurate real-time video of the inside of your sewer pipes.
This allows plumbers to identify:

  • the exact location of a problem
  • the severity of damage
  • pipe material condition
  • blockage causes
  • structural concerns

Accurate diagnostics help homeowners avoid unnecessary excavation and repairs.

In most cases, no. The inspection is typically performed through an existing cleanout or accessible drain opening.

Because the process is non-invasive, it allows plumbers to inspect underground sewer lines without damaging landscaping, flooring, or concrete unnecessarily.

Most sewer line inspections can be completed within about 30 minutes to an hour depending on:

  • pipe accessibility
  • sewer line length
  • severity of blockage
  • overall system condition

More complex systems or severe obstructions may require additional time.

Yes. Sewer inspection cameras can identify:

  • cracked pipes
  • separated joints
  • collapsed sections
  • corrosion damage
  • pipe bellies
  • root intrusion points

The inspection also helps determine the precise location and depth of the problem.

A sewer belly occurs when part of the sewer line sinks or settles, creating a low spot where water and waste collect instead of flowing properly.
This can lead to:

  • recurring backups
  • slow drains
  • buildup accumulation
  • repeated clogs

Camera inspections are one of the best ways to identify sewer bellies.

Many older San Diego homes have aging sewer systems, including cast iron or clay piping that may be deteriorating underground.
A sewer camera inspection before purchase can help uncover:

  • hidden sewer damage
  • root intrusion
  • pipe corrosion
  • partial collapses
  • expensive repair risks

This allows buyers to make more informed decisions before closing escrow.

Yes. Many plumbers perform camera inspections both before and after hydro jetting.
The inspection helps:

  • identify the cause of blockage
  • verify cleaning effectiveness
  • inspect pipe condition
  • determine whether additional repairs are needed

Many older San Diego homes still have original cast iron sewer lines that may now be decades beyond their intended lifespan.
Over time, cast iron pipes can develop:

  • corrosion
  • scaling
  • cracks
  • channel rot
  • restricted flow
  • structural deterioration

Camera inspections help evaluate the condition of aging sewer systems before larger failures occur.

Absolutely. Without a camera inspection, plumbers may only be guessing about what is happening underground.
A proper inspection helps:

  • identify the actual problem
  • avoid unnecessary digging
  • prevent misdiagnosis
  • target repairs more accurately
  • reduce repeat plumbing issues

Once the inspection is finished, the plumber reviews the findings and explains:

  • what was discovered
  • where the problem is located
  • the condition of the sewer line
  • recommended next steps

Depending on the results, solutions may include:

  • drain cleaning
  • hydro jetting
  • spot repair
  • trenchless sewer repair
  • sewer lining
  • full sewer replacement

Yes. Camera inspections are commonly used to identify internal pipe corrosion, especially in older cast iron systems.
Signs of corrosion may include:

  • flaking pipe walls
  • scaling buildup
  • restricted pipe diameter
  • cracks or weak sections

Early detection helps homeowners plan repairs before major sewer failures occur.

Homes with older sewer systems, large trees, or recurring drain issues may benefit from periodic inspections every few years.

Preventive inspections can help identify problems early before major backups or sewer damage occurs.

I am very pleased with this company because they have great people working for them. [My technician] was organized and all were at the house in 2 days. Paper booties were worn. The electricians knew what they were doing and produce excellent work. I had 3 new circuits put in along with updating box. All this was done in one day. This co also sends a pix of technician who is coming to your house. Every person had lovely manners, and cleaned up, even vacuumed under stove when it was moved. A fine experience and I’d use them again.

I had a water leak at my house and its cause was extremely difficult to find. Our tech spent a long time carefully analyzing and testing all possible options until he found the cause of the leak, like really a true detective, that nobody else before him was able to find. He demonstrated not only that he is a truly top professional but the he also is kind, patient and understanding. He explained all the issues very well and was also mindful of my time and convenience. He works very fast, efficiently and reliably and is extremely nice human being.

Point Loma Electric and Plumbing did electrical work in our house once and we liked the service the first time so we called them again. The technicians have been nothing but friendly and professional both times. They walked us through every step of the process. They showed up on time and completed the work in a timely manner. If we had any concerns they made sure the address them, if anything was needed, they handled it. We will definitely use Point Loma Electric and Plumbing again. Johnny who oversaw the work is the best!! Thank you

My a/c has not been working for some time. I called Point Loma Electrical and they sent Nicholas Mullins to stop by and check it out. What a great guy. He was very respectful, honest, evaluated the situation and made recommendations that I felt were straight forward. This company is top notch and I would recommend them to any of my friends and family. This is now my go to ac repair company.

This is a great team. I had to replace some fluorescent lights in the kitchen. I couldn't do it myself because the ballasts had to be replaced and that's above my skill level. Anthony and Matt came today and put in new led lights (with a 10 year warranty- fluorescent lights are ancient tech). Anthony and Matt were very professional and efficient. I would recommend them highly!
