Why Is My AC Blowing Hot Air?

Published by Point Loma Electric, Plumbing, Heating & Air

Few things are more frustrating than turning on your air conditioner on a hot day and realizing it’s blowing warm air. The answer to why you’re AC isn’t blowing cool air can range from simple fixes to more serious mechanical problems. Understanding the common causes can help you know when it’s time to call in a professional.

5 Reasons Your AC Isn’t Blowing Cold Air

Here are the 5 most common reasons your AC is blowing warm air:

1. Incorrect Thermostat Settings

Sometimes the problem isn’t with your air conditioner at all—it’s the thermostat. If your thermostat is set to “heat” instead of “cool,” or the fan is switched to “on” instead of “auto,” your system may circulate warm air. Always double-check the settings before assuming something more serious is wrong.

2. Dirty Air Filter

Your air filter plays a big role in your AC’s performance. When filters become clogged with dirt and dust, airflow gets restricted, which can cause your system to overheat. As a safety feature, many units will shut down the cooling cycle, leaving you with warm air coming through the vents. Replacing or cleaning your filter regularly is an easy way to prevent this.

3. Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant is the crucial substance in your AC that absorbs heat from inside your home and releases it outdoors. If your system has a leak, the refrigerant level drops, and your AC can no longer cool effectively. In many cases, low refrigerant is the answer to why your AC is blowing hot air. Since refrigerant handling requires a licensed professional, this is a problem best left to trained technicians.

4. Electrical or Power Issues

Your air conditioning system relies on many different components working together, including the indoor air handler and outdoor condenser. If a circuit breaker trips or a fuse blows, one part of the system may stop working. This imbalance can cause the AC to blow warm air. Resetting the breaker may help temporarily, but if the problem continues, you’ll need professional service to prevent further damage.

5. Frozen Evaporator Coils

Evaporator coils inside your system are responsible for absorbing heat. If these coils freeze over—often due to low refrigerant, a dirty filter, or poor airflow—the system can’t do its job. When that happens, you may notice your AC blowing hot or room-temperature air instead of cool air. A technician can safely defrost the coils and fix the underlying cause.

When to Call a Professional

While some issues, like thermostat settings or clogged filters, can be fixed easily, most AC issues require expert attention. Electrical problems, refrigerant leaks, and frozen coils are not DIY repairs and could become dangerous or more costly if ignored.

I am very pleased with this company because they have great people working for them. [My technician] was organized and all were at the house in 2 days. Paper booties were worn. The electricians knew what they were doing and produce excellent work. I had 3 new circuits put in along with updating box. All this was done in one day. This co also sends a pix of technician who is coming to your house. Every person had lovely manners, and cleaned up, even vacuumed under stove when it was moved. A fine experience and I’d use them again.

I had a water leak at my house and its cause was extremely difficult to find. Our tech spent a long time carefully analyzing and testing all possible options until he found the cause of the leak, like really a true detective, that nobody else before him was able to find. He demonstrated not only that he is a truly top professional but the he also is kind, patient and understanding. He explained all the issues very well and was also mindful of my time and convenience. He works very fast, efficiently and reliably and is extremely nice human being.

Point Loma Electric and Plumbing did electrical work in our house once and we liked the service the first time so we called them again. The technicians have been nothing but friendly and professional both times. They walked us through every step of the process. They showed up on time and completed the work in a timely manner. If we had any concerns they made sure the address them, if anything was needed, they handled it. We will definitely use Point Loma Electric and Plumbing again. Johnny who oversaw the work is the best!! Thank you

Always great to work with them - years 2011 for new electrical panel, and 2025 for some minor upgrades. Erich and Leo corrected 3 problems with old wiring we were having. Very great team and very much appreciate their work.

My a/c has not been working for some time. I called Point Loma Electrical and they sent Nicholas Mullins to stop by and check it out. What a great guy. He was very respectful, honest, evaluated the situation and made recommendations that I felt were straight forward. This company is top notch and I would recommend them to any of my friends and family. This is now my go to ac repair company.

This is a great team. I had to replace some fluorescent lights in the kitchen. I couldn't do it myself because the ballasts had to be replaced and that's above my skill level. Anthony and Matt came today and put in new led lights (with a 10 year warranty- fluorescent lights are ancient tech). Anthony and Matt were very professional and efficient. I would recommend them highly!
