Read These Patriotic Plumbing Facts to Celebrate Fourth of July

Published by Webmaster

Fourth of July is fast approaching, and homeowners and their families must ready themselves to celebrate in style. And what better way to do this than to learn patriotic plumbing facts!

Sure, this might be a little nerdy, but knowledge is power, and it can help people better appreciate just how far America’s infrastructure has progressed! To help people get started, here is a rundown of some surprising but true plumbing facts.

Plumbing and U.S. History

What is more American than good old-fashioned U.S. history?! Here are some fun facts people probably didn’t know. Ever heard of the Tremont House in Boston? Well, this was the first hotel in history that provided full indoor plumbing infrastructure for its guests. This included running water, and such offerings were pretty much unheard of at the time!
How about Joseph Gayetty? He was the original engineer of modern-day toilet paper. Interestingly, Joseph developed toilet paper for medical use and did not anticipate this taking off as the mainstream product it has become today. His invention came in 1857.

Finally, ever heard of Millard Fillmore? While many people probably have since he previously served as president, many people probably don’t know that he is responsible for installing flush toilets into the White House. Sure, this seems like a no-brainer these days, but it was a novel concept back when he initiated it!

Toilet Facts

While many people probably didn’t know the American history plumbing facts, there are many present-day toilet facts that may also be quite surprising. For example:

  • Accidents – over 7 million Americans admit to having accidentally dropped their cellphones into toilets
  • Cumulative usage – the average American spends a total of three years of their life sitting on toilets
  • Toilet paper habits – toilet paper is more often (75% of the time) placed so that the flap rolls over the top instead of the back
  • User preferences – statistically speaking, the first stall in a restroom tends to be the cleanest since it is generally the least used

Of course, countless other toilet facts would probably surprise many homeowners and their families. It is funny to think how much is unknown about toilets even though people use them often multiple times a day!

Other Interesting Plumbing Facts

Toilets are not the only plumbing appliance that many people don’t know much about. Let’s look at some of the other plumbing fixtures for some cool fun facts:

  • Garden hoses – these originally came from fire hoses, which were made from ox intestines
  • Sprinklers – 5 am to 10 am is the best window for homeowners to water their lawns, largely because of moderate temperature levels
  • Pipe origins – modern-day pipes originated from the Indus River Valley civilization, which used earthen plumbing pipes to drain waste and transport water
  • Sinks – the term “sink” derived from the old English word “sincan,” which refers to becoming submerged or going under

Next time homeowners and their families use the home plumbing, they might have an even greater appreciation for the history and complexity of these systems.

I am very pleased with this company because they have great people working for them. [My technician] was organized and all were at the house in 2 days. Paper booties were worn. The electricians knew what they were doing and produce excellent work. I had 3 new circuits put in along with updating box. All this was done in one day. This co also sends a pix of technician who is coming to your house. Every person had lovely manners, and cleaned up, even vacuumed under stove when it was moved. A fine experience and I’d use them again.

I had a water leak at my house and its cause was extremely difficult to find. Our tech spent a long time carefully analyzing and testing all possible options until he found the cause of the leak, like really a true detective, that nobody else before him was able to find. He demonstrated not only that he is a truly top professional but the he also is kind, patient and understanding. He explained all the issues very well and was also mindful of my time and convenience. He works very fast, efficiently and reliably and is extremely nice human being.

Point Loma Electric and Plumbing did electrical work in our house once and we liked the service the first time so we called them again. The technicians have been nothing but friendly and professional both times. They walked us through every step of the process. They showed up on time and completed the work in a timely manner. If we had any concerns they made sure the address them, if anything was needed, they handled it. We will definitely use Point Loma Electric and Plumbing again. Johnny who oversaw the work is the best!! Thank you

Had an emergency water heater leak. Called Point Loma. Within the hour, James shows up and goes to work. And by the next day, we have a tankless water heater up and running. Thanks to James for the excellent customer attention, service and hard work!

Always great to work with them - years 2011 for new electrical panel, and 2025 for some minor upgrades. Erich and Leo corrected 3 problems with old wiring we were having. Very great team and very much appreciate their work.

My a/c has not been working for some time. I called Point Loma Electrical and they sent Nicholas Mullins to stop by and check it out. What a great guy. He was very respectful, honest, evaluated the situation and made recommendations that I felt were straight forward. This company is top notch and I would recommend them to any of my friends and family. This is now my go to ac repair company.

We had Point Loma Elec rewire our entire 62 year-old house's electric. They worked efficiently and were thorough letting us know what was discovered and done each day. Timely, neat, and responsive and affordable with great financing. Highly recommend.

This is a great team. I had to replace some fluorescent lights in the kitchen. I couldn't do it myself because the ballasts had to be replaced and that's above my skill level. Anthony and Matt came today and put in new led lights (with a 10 year warranty- fluorescent lights are ancient tech). Anthony and Matt were very professional and efficient. I would recommend them highly!
