Your Guide to Mini Splits Installation in San Diego

Mini splits are an excellent choice for San Diego’s diverse microclimates, where coastal fog can linger in the mornings while afternoons warm up considerably. These ductless systems allow homeowners to cool or heat specific zones of their home without wasting energy on unoccupied spaces.

For older San Diego homes without existing ductwork, mini splits deliver modern comfort without the extensive renovation required by a traditional HVAC system. Are you considering a mini split for your San Diego home?

Mini Split Installation Costs in San Diego: What to Budget

Average Price Range for Standard Installations

A standard mini split installation usually costs between $8,500 and $20,000, covering a quality unit with heating and cooling, professional installation, and basic electrical work.

Factors That Can Increase Your Installation Cost

Costs rise with complex home construction, such as brick or concrete walls, or with longer distances between indoor and outdoor units, which require extra refrigerant lines. Higher-end systems generally cost more but deliver higher efficiency and longer lifespans.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

Permit fees in San Diego vary, and reputable contractors typically include these costs in their pricing. Some companies may also add their own premiums to cover processing and administrative work. Always verify what your installation bill includes so you’re aware of any added permit-related charges.

How to Choose the Best Mini Split Installer in San Diego

A best-in-class and licensed mini split installer ensures proper sizing and reliable performance.

Verify Experience & System Knowledge

Ensure the installer has hands-on experience with your specific mini split model and understands the nuances of different systems. Ask about their approach to sizing your home properly using heat load calculations rather than simple square footage estimates.

Experienced installers will also know how to optimize system placement and settings for San Diego’s coastal climate and older home layouts.

Licensing & Insurance

Confirm the contractor holds a valid C-20 HVAC license from the California Contractors State License Board. This guarantees they meet state regulations and have proven proficiency in HVAC work. Also, verify that they carry both general liability and workers’ compensation insurance to protect your home and family in case of accidents during installation.

Brand-Specific Training

Many manufacturers offer certification programs for authorized installers. Contractors with these credentials have demonstrated expertise with the system, understand common installation challenges, and often provide better technical support and warranty coverage. Ask about their training, relationship with the manufacturer, and experience installing systems in homes similar to yours.

Installation Timeline & Process

Understand how long the installation will take and what preparations you need to make. Quality installers provide a clear step-by-step plan, from mounting brackets and running line sets to making electrical connections and system startup. They should also explain how they’ll protect your floors and walls, handle cleanup, and test the system thoroughly before completing the job.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will my Homeowners Association (HOA) need to approve my mini split installation?

Many San Diego HOAs require approval for exterior modifications, including mini split outdoor units. which may cover placement, screening, or aesthetics. Submit your plans in advance to ensure approval and avoid delays.

What’s the difference between a mini split and a traditional AC system?

Traditional central AC uses ductwork to cool your entire home, whereas mini splits deliver air directly to individual rooms through wall or ceiling units. This ductless design reduces energy losses, enables zone-specific temperature control, and minimizes disruption during installation.

How much can I expect to save on my energy bills with a mini split?

Mini splits are more energy-efficient than older HVAC systems. Homeowners often notice lower energy usage and reduced cooling costs, especially compared to older central AC systems. Exact savings depend on your previous system, usage patterns, and the specific mini split installed.

How often do mini-splits need maintenance in San Diego’s climate?

For peak performance, mini splits should receive professional maintenance annually, ideally before the summer season. This includes cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical connections, and ensuring proper drainage.

Homes near the coast may need extra attention due to salt air exposure, which can affect outdoor units. Regular filter cleaning between professional visits helps maintain efficiency and air quality.

How long does a mini split installation typically take in San Diego?

The timeline for a mini split installation depends on the system type and your home’s layout, with factors such as access, electrical work, and mounting requirements affecting the duration. Working with a locally experienced team like Point Loma Home Pros ensures the process is carefully planned and efficiently executed.

Our licensed technicians handle every step, from unit placement and electrical connections to cleanup, providing a clear timeline, minimizing surprises, and optimizing your system’s performance for San Diego’s unique coastal and inland climates.

I am very pleased with this company because they have great people working for them. [My technician] was organized and all were at the house in 2 days. Paper booties were worn. The electricians knew what they were doing and produce excellent work. I had 3 new circuits put in along with updating box. All this was done in one day. This co also sends a pix of technician who is coming to your house. Every person had lovely manners, and cleaned up, even vacuumed under stove when it was moved. A fine experience and I’d use them again.

I had a water leak at my house and its cause was extremely difficult to find. Our tech spent a long time carefully analyzing and testing all possible options until he found the cause of the leak, like really a true detective, that nobody else before him was able to find. He demonstrated not only that he is a truly top professional but the he also is kind, patient and understanding. He explained all the issues very well and was also mindful of my time and convenience. He works very fast, efficiently and reliably and is extremely nice human being.

Point Loma Electric and Plumbing did electrical work in our house once and we liked the service the first time so we called them again. The technicians have been nothing but friendly and professional both times. They walked us through every step of the process. They showed up on time and completed the work in a timely manner. If we had any concerns they made sure the address them, if anything was needed, they handled it. We will definitely use Point Loma Electric and Plumbing again. Johnny who oversaw the work is the best!! Thank you

Always great to work with them - years 2011 for new electrical panel, and 2025 for some minor upgrades. Erich and Leo corrected 3 problems with old wiring we were having. Very great team and very much appreciate their work.

My a/c has not been working for some time. I called Point Loma Electrical and they sent Nicholas Mullins to stop by and check it out. What a great guy. He was very respectful, honest, evaluated the situation and made recommendations that I felt were straight forward. This company is top notch and I would recommend them to any of my friends and family. This is now my go to ac repair company.

We had Point Loma Elec rewire our entire 62 year-old house's electric. They worked efficiently and were thorough letting us know what was discovered and done each day. Timely, neat, and responsive and affordable with great financing. Highly recommend.

This is a great team. I had to replace some fluorescent lights in the kitchen. I couldn't do it myself because the ballasts had to be replaced and that's above my skill level. Anthony and Matt came today and put in new led lights (with a 10 year warranty- fluorescent lights are ancient tech). Anthony and Matt were very professional and efficient. I would recommend them highly!
