Electrician in Lakeside, CA: Cost & How to Find the Best Company

Published by Jamie Hunley

Key Takeaways

  • Electrical work in Lakeside spans a wide range, with outlet replacements starting around $175 and whole-home rewiring on older properties reaching $40,000, depending on square footage, access, and the condition of existing wiring.
  • Most projects beyond minor repairs require a San Diego County permit, and any contractor who suggests skipping that step is one to walk away from.
  • Many Lakeside homes still run on aluminum wiring, Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels, and two-prong outlets, so the right contractor needs hands-on remediation experience, not just general residential service.
  • Four checks separate the best electricians from the rest: an active C-10 license, detailed recent reviews, relevant project experience, and clear communication starting with the first phone call.
  • Point Loma Home Pros has served San Diego since 1988, with licensed electricians who specialize in older East County homes and a repair-first approach to panel upgrades, rewiring, and EV charger installations.

What Lakeside Homeowners Need to Know First

The best electrician in Lakeside is the one who holds an active C-10 license, carries general liability insurance, pulls the right San Diego County permits, and has direct experience with the panel, wiring, and outlet conditions common in older East County homes. Pricing matters, but it sits below those four checks because any one of them, missed, turns a routine job into an expensive correction. Which contractor fits depends on the age of your home, the scope of the project, and how much weight you give to communication style and warranty terms.

Lakeside has a high share of homes built before modern electrical codes, which means a fair number of properties still carry aluminum wiring, Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels, and ungrounded two-prong outlets that no longer meet safety standards.

If you’re hiring in Lakeside, the sections below cover real cost ranges by project type, the criteria to compare contractors against, and the steps to take before signing a single estimate.

Typical Electrician Costs in Lakeside, CA

Most Lakeside electrical jobs are priced job-by-job, with the home’s age, accessibility, and permit needs each shifting the final figure.

Property characteristics often shape the final figure of an electrical job more than the job description alone. Older ranch homes, detached garages, rural lots with longer service runs, and properties with workshops or barns each carry conditions that affect labor and materials.

In Lakeside, a panel upgrade typically costs $9,000 to $18,000. Level 2 EV charger installations run $700 to $3,000, with load capacity and conduit run length to the parking area shaping the final figure. Whole-house rewiring ranges from $8,000 to $40,000, with square footage and existing wiring condition determining where a project lands within the spread.

For more contained projects, outlet installation or replacement falls between $175 and $450, ceiling fan installations between $299 and $1,500, and new dedicated circuits between $1,000 and $3,500.

How to Find the Best Electrician in Lakeside, CA

Price matters, but it shouldn’t be the only thing driving your decision. The best electricians in Lakeside combine technical skill, local knowledge, and clear communication, and finding that combination takes a little more than a quick Google search.

The right electrician in Lakeside earns the job through verified credentials, hands-on diagnostic work, and clear answers from the first call.

1. Verify License & Insurance

Before anything else, confirm that any electrician you’re considering holds an active C-10 license through the California Contractors State License Board. You can verify this directly at the CSLB website using the contractor’s license number. Never hire someone who can’t provide a license number up front.

2. Check Reviews

Google reviews, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau are your best starting points for gauging a contractor’s real-world reputation. Read the actual content of reviews. A contractor with 4.7 stars and 200 detailed reviews tells a much more reliable story than one with five stars and only eight reviews.

3. Confirm Relevant Experience

Not all electrical work is the same, and experience with one type of job doesn’t automatically translate to another. An electrician who specializes in commercial tenant improvements may not have the same depth of experience with residential panel upgrades or older home rewiring, and vice versa.

For older Lakeside homes specifically, experience with aluminum wiring remediation, Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel replacements, and two-prong outlet upgrades is particularly valuable. These are known safety concerns in aging California housing stock, and handling them correctly requires both knowledge and care.

4. Assess Communication & Professionalism

The way an electrician communicates before the job starts is usually a preview of how the job will go. Do they answer calls or return them promptly? Do they show up on time for the estimate?

These small signals matter because electrical projects, especially larger ones, often involve unexpected discoveries. You want a contractor who will keep you informed rather than just hand you a bigger bill at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does an electrician cost per hour in Lakeside, CA?

Electrician pricing in Lakeside depends on factors such as the scope of work, your home’s condition, and whether permits are involved. For instance, new dedicated circuits typically run $1,000 to $3,500, while whole-house rewiring on older properties ranges from $8,000 to $40,000. Flat-rate pricing is standard for most defined scopes, which makes it easier to plan ahead.

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Lakeside, CA?

In most cases, yes. Lakeside falls under San Diego County jurisdiction, which requires permits for the majority of electrical work beyond simple repairs, including panel upgrades, new circuit installations, EV charger installations, and any rewiring.

Do Lakeside electrician contractors offer emergency services?

Yes, many licensed electricians in Lakeside, including Point Loma Home Pros, offer emergency electrical services. Always confirm the contractor’s response availability and any emergency pricing structure before booking.

How long does a panel upgrade take in Lakeside?

A standard panel upgrade in a single-family home generally takes one to two days of on-site work, plus inspection time. Older homes with outdated wiring, properties requiring a new meter socket, or utility coordination can further extend the timeline. A reputable electrician will give you a clear timeline so you can prepare in advance.

I am very pleased with this company because they have great people working for them. [My technician] was organized and all were at the house in 2 days. Paper booties were worn. The electricians knew what they were doing and produce excellent work. I had 3 new circuits put in along with updating box. All this was done in one day. This co also sends a pix of technician who is coming to your house. Every person had lovely manners, and cleaned up, even vacuumed under stove when it was moved. A fine experience and I’d use them again.

I had a water leak at my house and its cause was extremely difficult to find. Our tech spent a long time carefully analyzing and testing all possible options until he found the cause of the leak, like really a true detective, that nobody else before him was able to find. He demonstrated not only that he is a truly top professional but the he also is kind, patient and understanding. He explained all the issues very well and was also mindful of my time and convenience. He works very fast, efficiently and reliably and is extremely nice human being.

Point Loma Electric and Plumbing did electrical work in our house once and we liked the service the first time so we called them again. The technicians have been nothing but friendly and professional both times. They walked us through every step of the process. They showed up on time and completed the work in a timely manner. If we had any concerns they made sure the address them, if anything was needed, they handled it. We will definitely use Point Loma Electric and Plumbing again. Johnny who oversaw the work is the best!! Thank you

Always great to work with them - years 2011 for new electrical panel, and 2025 for some minor upgrades. Erich and Leo corrected 3 problems with old wiring we were having. Very great team and very much appreciate their work.

My a/c has not been working for some time. I called Point Loma Electrical and they sent Nicholas Mullins to stop by and check it out. What a great guy. He was very respectful, honest, evaluated the situation and made recommendations that I felt were straight forward. This company is top notch and I would recommend them to any of my friends and family. This is now my go to ac repair company.

We had Point Loma Elec rewire our entire 62 year-old house's electric. They worked efficiently and were thorough letting us know what was discovered and done each day. Timely, neat, and responsive and affordable with great financing. Highly recommend.

This is a great team. I had to replace some fluorescent lights in the kitchen. I couldn't do it myself because the ballasts had to be replaced and that's above my skill level. Anthony and Matt came today and put in new led lights (with a 10 year warranty- fluorescent lights are ancient tech). Anthony and Matt were very professional and efficient. I would recommend them highly!
