Is My Electrical Panel Safe?

Published by Webmaster

Homeowners often overlook the importance of a safe and efficient electrical panel. Yet, in the realm of household safety, knowing which electrical panels have been recalled is vital. The reason? Some panels pose significant hazards, including the risk of fire or thermal burns. With that said, you may be wondering: What electrical panels are recalled? Let’s dive deep into this topic below.

Understanding the Importance of Electrical Panel Safety

Before we delve into the specifics, it’s essential to appreciate why recalled electrical panels should be of concern. A malfunctioning or outdated panel can lead to significant risks. Not only can it cause a house fire, but it may also lead to thermal burn injuries for residents. The primary and secondary reasons for such recalls often revolve around these potential hazards.

Major Recalled Electrical Panels in the United States

Believe it or not, recalled electrical panels encompass a range of brands and models, posing safety concerns. So, what electrical panels are recalled? Let’s review some of the most notable ones.

Zinsco and GTE Sylvania Panels

Zinsco panels were once popular and widely installed across the United States. However, over time, it became evident that these panels often failed to provide the safety and functionality required.

Some homeowners have reported that their Zinsco panels melted, causing a severe fire risk. The circuit breakers would overheat and melt, essentially fusing with the busbar. This is extremely dangerous because a melted circuit breaker can’t trip — so if the circuit gets overloaded or shorts, the surge of power can start a fire in the house.

Similarly, panels made by GTE Sylvania, which are essentially Zinsco panels under a different name, have also been found faulty. It’s crucial to be aware of these recalled electrical panels and consider a replacement if you have them in your home.

Federal Pacific and Stab-Lok Panels

When discussing what electrical panels are recalled, we have to mention another significant manufacturer, Federal Pacific, which produced the notorious Stab-Lok panels. Research has shown that these panels fail to trip when overloaded. This malfunction poses a significant risk, as it can lead to electrical fires. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has been actively involved in ensuring these panels are recalled and replaced.

Challenger Electrical Panels

Though not as infamous as Zinsco or Federal Pacific, Challenger Electrical Panels have their share of problems. These recalled electrical panels have been known to have issues related to their breakers, which can lead to overheating.

Schneider Electric’s Recall

A notable recall that occurred recently was by Schneider Electric. In a major move, Schneider Electric recalled 1.4 million electrical panels due to thermal burn and fire hazards. This recall specifically targeted the Square D QO Plug-On Neutral Load Centers, also known as load centers breaker boxes. These recalled circuit breaker boxes were particularly problematic for those manufactured between December 2019 and January 2022, with date codes between 200561 and 220233.

Are Your Panels Affected?

If your home has any of the above panels or if you’re uncertain about your panel’s brand, it’s essential to check for any affected catalog part numbers. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to the safety of your home and loved ones.

What Should You Do?

If you suspect that your electrical panel might be among the recalled ones, it’s essential to act swiftly. Here’s a recommended course of action:

  1. Consult a Qualified Electrician: Before making any decisions, have a qualified electrician inspect your electrical system. They can provide insights into the health of your panel and advise if a replacement is needed.
  2. Check for Updates: Keep an eye on announcements from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. They regularly update information about recalled electrical products.
  3. Consider an Upgrade: If your panel falls under the recalled category or is outdated, consider an upgrade. Modern panels are considered safer and more efficient, and they can handle the energy demands of today’s homes.

I am very pleased with this company because they have great people working for them. [My technician] was organized and all were at the house in 2 days. Paper booties were worn. The electricians knew what they were doing and produce excellent work. I had 3 new circuits put in along with updating box. All this was done in one day. This co also sends a pix of technician who is coming to your house. Every person had lovely manners, and cleaned up, even vacuumed under stove when it was moved. A fine experience and I’d use them again.

I had a water leak at my house and its cause was extremely difficult to find. Our tech spent a long time carefully analyzing and testing all possible options until he found the cause of the leak, like really a true detective, that nobody else before him was able to find. He demonstrated not only that he is a truly top professional but the he also is kind, patient and understanding. He explained all the issues very well and was also mindful of my time and convenience. He works very fast, efficiently and reliably and is extremely nice human being.

Point Loma Electric and Plumbing did electrical work in our house once and we liked the service the first time so we called them again. The technicians have been nothing but friendly and professional both times. They walked us through every step of the process. They showed up on time and completed the work in a timely manner. If we had any concerns they made sure the address them, if anything was needed, they handled it. We will definitely use Point Loma Electric and Plumbing again. Always great to work with them - years 2011 for new electrical panel, and 2025 for some minor upgrades. Erich and Leo corrected 3 problems with old wiring we were having. Very great team and very much appreciate their work.

My a/c has not been working for some time. I called Point Loma Electrical and they sent Nicholas Mullins to stop by and check it out. What a great guy. He was very respectful, honest, evaluated the situation and made recommendations that I felt were straight forward. This company is top notch and I would recommend them to any of my friends and family. This is now my go to ac repair company.

This is a great team. I had to replace some fluorescent lights in the kitchen. I couldn't do it myself because the ballasts had to be replaced and that's above my skill level. Anthony and Matt came today and put in new led lights (with a 10 year warranty- fluorescent lights are ancient tech). Anthony and Matt were very professional and efficient. I would recommend them highly!
